Sugar cane can be found on grass, sand and dirt blocks immediately adjacent to water.
Sugar cane is classified as a non-solid block, allowing players and mobs to walk through, but blocking water, lava and projectiles like an ordinary block. It is also completely fireproof.
When harvesting sugar cane, try hitting the middle block to avoid needing to replant.
