The Silverfish pops out of stone bricks found in strongholds. If the player mines these blocks Silverfish may pop out and attack them.

Silverfish can easily become a swarm as they will spawn near eachother whenever a player damages one of them. Silverfish will run away if a player puts a bit of distance between him or herself and the mob.

If left alone, silverfish can re-enter some blocks that are not necessarily stone bricks.
